Gamma Knife for OCD

After losing connection to career, family and friends, and trying every avenue of treatment available, Gerry Radano was finally chosen to receive an experimental brain surgery, Gamma Knife. Although there is no guarantee on the success rate for Gamma Knife, the possible prognosis she was given by the doctors was very impressive: 50% very improved, 30% moderately improved, 20% slight or no improvement.

That being said, Gamma Knife does not take out the OCD genes. What it does do is to help those who are treatment resistant to all other avenues of conventional OCD protocols to lower the volume of the obsessions and (hopefully) be able to function. Gerry was also told not to expect any immediate results. Any changes from the operation would, in fact, take place over a period of anywhere from three months to a year, and possibly longer.

At Butler/Rhode Island Hospitals in Providence, RI, on November 10, 1999, Gerry Radano became the 32nd person in the US to have Gamma Knife for OCD; and the first person to have the operation covered by an insurance company. For her, Gamma Knife was truly a miracle. While it did enable Gerry to take back her life, it is not a 100% cure. There are some OCD situations that she still needs to talk her way through or avoid all together.

In her statement, "Gamma Knife is the best thing that ever happened to my OCD life and I would do it again in a heart beat," it is obvious that Gerry Radano feels very blessed and grateful that she was chosen to be the recipient of this amazing technology. Anyone considering this procedure should keep in mind that it is still experimental brain surgery and not a decision to be taken lightly. Besides OCD, Gamma Knife is now being used for Depression, Epilepsy, Parkinson's, and Brain Tumors.

NOTE: "Clomipramine/Anafranil" is one of the main pharmaceuticals required for being eligible for getting considered for a Gamma Knife procedure. It is often recommended that "Abilify" (5MG) be taken to enhance the effect of the Clomipramine/Anafranil: http://www.rxlist.com/anafranil-drug/indications-dosage.htm
